Recommendation?

Guys, I'm looking to update my video card in my rig. I currently have an ATI 5770. my mobo has 1x PCIe slot (2.0 i believe). I am looking to get more horsepower in the single slot, so I would like to take advantage of a "dual" video card. I have heard that there are 2 cards in either crossfire or SLI stuck together to use a single PCIe slot.

I would like your feedback on this, pluses or minuses to doing it this way. if it turns out a dual video card doesn't make sense, which new card would you recommend? I'm open to either nVidia or AMD...

get AMD's new 7970 that was released literally yesterday on the 22nd lol. If you can afford it at least $550 but it far outpreforms the Nvidia 580, takes less power, and runs cooler.
